HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF MUSIC VIDEO

The music video have been around since 1920's

1965: Bob Dylan
Subterranean Homesick Blues as a segment for D.A Pensebaker's film, 'Don't look back'- widely credited as one of the first modern music videos. (Lyrics within the music video- inspiration because it was the first one)

Pop videos
1970: The record industry discovers T.V show as a great opportunity to promote their artists.

  • They focus on producing short 'promos', early music video which started to replace live performances.
Bohemian Rhapsody
1975: Ground breaking video with modern visual effect. It set the language for modern music video.

Technical Codes- Cinematography
Camera movement may accompany movement of the performance (walking, dancing, etc) but it may also be used to create a more  dynamic feel to stage performance, by for instance constantly circling around the band as they perform on stage.

Technical codes: Editing

  • Fast pace editing
  • Fast cut
  • Montage
  • Slow pace editing for slow music
  • Editing matches the genre of the music for example: Adele sings ballads and her music video matches the song
  • Blue screen or green screen is called CHROMA-KEYPR

  • Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. e.g. stage performance in a rock video
  • There is a relationship between the lyric and the visuals
  • There is a relationship between the music and the visuals
  • There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescope etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  • there is open inter textual references to (film, TV programs, other music videos)

What is the purpose of inter textual efiencing?

  • John Stuarts description of the music video 'incorporating, raiding and reconstructing' is essentially the essence of inter textuality.
  • It can add another dimension of meaning to a text as well as filling important roles to the audience.
